A new take on AFFILIATIONS

SOLO

If you used Solo on your last roll, you cannot receive PP's/Assets from other players until you roll again using either a Buddy or Team die. Other players cannot use healing SFX or Recovery Actions on a player who last rolled using Solo. Heroes who last rolled using Solo cannot be targeted with the Area Attack SFX. If you are Stressed Out after using Solo on your last roll, your character will almost certainly spend the next Transition Scene being unconscious, captive, or otherwise separated from the remaining players.

Tl;dr: Going Solo means your hero is refusing aid or using tactics that make them unable to receive aid from others.

BUDDY

If you used Buddy on your last roll, you can receive 1 PP and 1 Asset per roll from a chosen player in the Scene. Your Buddy can change between rolls, but you may only have one Buddy per roll. During an Action Scene, only that player's declared Buddy may use healing SFX or Recovery Actions on a player who last rolled using Buddy. This limit does not apply during Transition Scenes. If you are Stressed Out after using Buddy on your last roll, your last Buddy can step back your Stress by choosing to take d6 Stress of that type.

Tl;dr: Having a Buddy means your hero is cooperating with just one chosen friend or partner, as opposed to an entire team.

***

TEAM

If you used Team on your last roll, you can receive 1 PP and 1 Asset per roll from other players in the Scene. The PP and Asset may come from different players. During an Action Scene, players are not limited in using healing SFX or Recovery Actions on a player who last rolled using Team. If you are Stressed Out after using Team on your last roll, you may spend 1 PP to eliminate a Doom Pool die equal or smaller to the die that stressed you out.

Tl;dr: Being Team means you are working with other heroes toward a common goal, and facing each success/failure as a unit.

Transcribed MHR Datafiles

Apparently I remembered this blog exists, and why the heck shouldn't there be one of my exceedingly sporadic updates today? Here's a link to a comprehensive list of Marvel Heroic Roleplaying datafiles, as shared with me by my good buddy Marmar. It's a handy resource to have on hand, as opposed to trying to type up every single one yourself:

Fun with Wikis

One of the cool lesser-known features of the Roleplay Online message board is that, in addition to using it as a place to run a campaign, you can also set up a wiki for your particular group. For a game set in a universe as vast as Marvel, a wiki is a great way to keep track of all the characters, objects, and locations that players may interact with throughout the course of a campaign.

Marvel Heroic Roleplaying is unique in that, unlike most roleplaying games, players are encouraged to step into the shoes of established and well-known characters (Spider-Man, for example) rather than playing as their own original heroes. The game certainly allows for that latter option, though (And that may just be the subject of a future post...).

There are so many different versions of the Marvel Universe already, and since the world of an MHR campaign may be both familiar and different to the players, there is often a need to establish what exactly is the same and what players should expect to be different. How old is this version of Spider-Man, exactly? Is he with Mary Jane, Gwen Stacy, or one of his many other flames? Are we going with the classic web-shooters, or is this stuff coming out of his wrists?

To help deal with just these kinds of questions, Marvel Mania recently got its own wiki which you can visit here. It will be a place to catalog the histories of the many characters, and what happens to them over the course of the campaign. There isn't much content there yet, but it will be added to gradually in the coming months.

As for how exactly one might go about setting up their own wiki on Roleplay Online, stay tuned!

Avengers Assemble!

Welcome to my blog for Marvel Mania, an RPG campaign using the Marvel Heroic Roleplaying game system. The campaign began in late 2018 as a series of sessions played out in a group setting, and has since moved onto the Roleplay Online message boards in order to bring new players on board.

Marvel Heroic Roleplaying is a fun and simple RPG system that's easy to learn. Although the game was cancelled in 2013, there remains a dedicated community of fans who play the game and create new content for it. One of those is The Amazing Avengers, a sister campaign also running on the Roleplay Online message boards.

This blog aims to help keep the Marvel Heroic Roleplaying game system alive, as so many fans have already helped do since the end of its original run. There will be posts here recapping the online adventures played out in Marvel Mania and posts discussing technical aspects of the game, as well as original game content created by yours truly. Comments are welcome and encouraged.
